HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN. And ladies. And cyborgs & stroggs. I've done some CPU vs. bandwidth analysis, and I believe we're able to offer free web space to individuals and clans who would like to host quake-related files and/or web sites. We don't have a ton of disk space, but we can currently offer about 100 megs of storage, each. Here's the skinny: (Version 1.2)- Q. Who is this offer available to?
A. This offer is available to anyone who is an active player in good standing on our quake servers. By active, I mean you at least play a couple games a month on our servers. By good standing, I mean you aren't banned from the servers or forums. - Q. Will it always be free?
A. Yes, as long as you are still playing quake on our servers. - Q. How long will this service last? Will it get shut down someday?
A. I have already pledged to keep the tastyspleen.net quake servers up as long as I still have a heartbeat and am in a non-vegitative state. I pledge to keep this webspace up as long as the quake servers are up. - Q. How long will you continue to keep offering new accounts?
A. As long as we feel we have the resources to accomodate more new sites. It will be first come, first serve. When we run out of disk space or server resources, we will have to stop offering new accounts. - Q. Can I use my web space to store warez or illegal files?
A. Hell, no. Sorry. - Q. What if I disguise the warez? Like call it cool_demo.dm2 but it's really some warez file?
A. Don't do it. If I find out, you'll lose your account. - Q. Can I store non-quake related files in my webspace?
A. Your webspace is primarily intended to store files and web pages of general interest to the quake community. If you want to store some miscellaneous stuff as well, that's OK, as long as it's legal (see above) and doesn't take too much space. - Q. What if I just want to put up a home page with some pictures, screenshots, etc.
A. Sounds great! - Q. How many megs am I allowed to store in my webspace?
A. For now, let's say 50 to 100 megs. Try not to go over 100. These amounts may completely change later on, depending on available server resources. - Q. What if I am over the limit? Will you just delete my files?
A. Maybe. I'll probably try to contact you first, but there are no guarantees. Always, always, always keep backups of your data on your own computer. If we need to delete your files without warning, we reserve the right to do so. - Q. What if I need more than 100 megs because I have this awesome site of great benefit to the quake community?
A. Contact me and we'll try to be accomodating if we have the resources. - Q. Can I sue you if I have a problem with my webspace?
Damn it, no, please. It's a free service. - Q. What about if the server catches fire and all my files are lost. Can I sue you then?
Again, no, please. Always keep backups of your data on your own computer. We'll do our best to backup your webspace, but there cannot be any guarantees. - Q. Is any of this guaranteed in any way?
A. No. No guarantees, or warantees of any kind. It's a free service. We'll do our best. - Q. What's this "player in good standing" thing? Does that really mean if I get banned from the servers or the forums, I could lose my webspace?
A. Yes. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. If you've been around here long, you'll know most people have to work pretty hard to get banned, though. - Q. I have a domain name foo.bar.com, can I make that work with my webspace?
A. Yes, as long as your webspace usage meets the requirements above, about being legal and of general interest to the quake community. Clan sites are fine. - Q. I have multiple domain names, one for my own quake stuff, another for my clan. Can I point multiple domain names at my webspace?
A. Yes, that shouldn't be a problem. You'll still have to work within the megabyte limits of your account. - Q. What about PHP and database access? Can I create a dynamic web site?
A. Maybe. We don't have a lot of spare CPU cycles. Let us know what you want to do, and if it sounds cool and useful to the quake community, we'll most likely say OK as long as we think the server can handle it. - Q. How do I upload files to my webspace?
A. Using FTP, with your account name and password. Put files you want to show up on the web in your public_html folder. - Q. If I don't have my own domain name, what kind of URL will my site have?
A. If your username is 'l337qu4k3r' then your web URL would be http://tastyspleen.net/~l337qu4k3r/.
- Q. What about URLs like http://something.tastyspleen.net/ ?
A. We can do those. There may be a limited number possible, so it will be first come, first serve. - Q. My quake alias has lots of funky characters and spaces and stuff. Can my web account name be just like that?
A. No, sorry. Your web account name must be all lowercase, just letters and numbers. It has to begin with a letter. You can use a hyphen, but no other non-alphanumeric characters. It should be between 6 and 20 characters.
OK, that's the gist of it. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you would like an account set up for you, make sure you have read and agree to the above, and post below with the account name you would like. Generally, your account name should be something like your quake alias or forums handle, except meeting the lowercase alphanumeric restrictions described above. I will set up your account and PM you your password. Enjoy,

* Lemonzest begs for lemonzest.tastyspleen.net before some git like adam steals it.
