Eddie Van Halen's Pleasure of Dome (Studio version)
Tony McAlpine guitar solo (Ring Of Fire Burning Live in Tokyo 2002)
Doug Aldrich's Blues for Mylene (Whitesnake Live In The Still Of The Night)
Frank Blackfire guitar solo (Sodom Mortal Way Of Live 88)

Wow jager, honestly that's always been my favorite as well, no clue why it temporarily slipped my mind. Nothing better than listening to comfortably numb when you haven't in awhile, while lifted off your ass :>

That is a great one.  The best solos are ones that fit emotional with the song, not just a bunch of random notes from a guitarist showing off.  Comfortably numb is one of those, Pink Floyd has that great ability.  I always thought the solo from Money was pretty sick for being so simple.

Pearl Jam has a song called Immortality, which falls in line with these.  Just fits the song and lyrics so well.  Check it.

I think a decade or two ago Rolling Stone (or maybe Guitar Player magazine) listed the 10 best guitar solos. I can't remember them all but a few stick in my mind:

Eric Claptons solo on "I'm So Glad" - Fresh Cream album
Jeff "Skunk" Baxters solo on Reeling in the Years (Steely Dan)
Jimi Hendrix "Red House" and "All along the Watchtower"
Alvin Lee (TYA) "Goin Home - Live at Woodstock"
Eric Clapton - "Crossroads"

Can't remember the rest. But playing 32nd notes and lightening arpeggios really aren't what a good solo is all about. Frankly its hard to absorb what the guitarist is playing because its too fast. Its more about feel, how it fits the song, the smoothness of the technique and the quality of the vibrato. This takes years and years to learn.

I agree, give me a guitarist whom can put together a song with a purpose over a technical speed guitarist anytime.  I don't think it is something that can be taught or learned though, it is something that is just part of that persons talent.  Some people just have it in them, others don't.
