Any good Q2 PSX map references?
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:26:33 PM »
Due to the relatively positive feedback I got from my remake of Captivity, (q2psdm1) I`m thinking of remaking some more of the maps, perhaps with the help of TheMuffinMan86. (he said he also wanted to do this) My next target is Hydraphobia, which iirc was the most popular of all the PS2-exclusive maps. There actually has been an attempt to remake it before, but it`s downright awful - fullbright, crappy texturing, inaccurate geometry, and it was probably leaked too. (I would link to vid, but I don`t want to embarass the creator... even though it`s pretty much Cranky Steve material...)

The only problem is lack of good references. I lost my copy of Quake 2 PSX years ago. I was lucky to find a 1v1 video on YouTube on Captivity for reference, and along with using a Doom version for reference, I was able to remake it. The video of the 1v1 match was only divided into two screens so there wasn`t much of a problem there. But for other maps, the only videos you can find are Polish tournament matches from 2010, (yes, people still played it to last year) here`s one on Hydraphobia. As you can see it`s dark, blurry, split into four small screens, and is recorded through a camera as opposed to using a video capture card. It really does make it more difficult to get the details and item placement right, since you could easily miss a health or something in the vid. Some vids don`t even explore 100% of the map, leaving out key areas that possibly define the map.

There is a complete set of remakes for the Quake 2 PSX maps ported to a Q2 mod for Doom. But I have doubts about using them as complete references since the engine cannot draw sectors over another like a true 3D game. Here`s the channel where you can find them: http://www.youtube.com/user/hfc2x

Does anyone know of, or is willing to contribute, any good references for the Quake 2 PlayStation deathmatch maps? Thank you very much in advance, it is greatly appreciated.

I've never played the PSX/PS2 version of quake 2 as I don't have it for those platforms but I've always wanted to play the N64 Exclusive maps on the PC lol, but it would be nice to see these remakes for the PC so we may all enjoy it.

might wanna talk to peewee, i think he likes the console stuff :)

also, i do have a ps1 version of quake2, i can kick the disc in my computer and make you an iso for you IF YOU SWEAR YOU OWN THE GAME AND JUST CANT FIND IT

that way you can kick it up in an emulator for easy reference, or even rip files right off maybe

hehe, well unfortunately I`m sure I don`t have my Q2 PS1 CD anymore. I think I remember my mom making me have to throw it away (I was maybe 7 or 8 back then... lol) cuz she thought it was too "violent".

They should all be available on Mutant via Mymap

I only did n64 versions. I don't have the psx version. As a little hint, I got a rom and an emulator to do my copies in order to better compare sizes and textures. I own a copy of the game, but loading it and trying to finangle a way to recreate maps that way would be a nightmare.

Thats awesome, but I was looking for the single player levels. Back before I started playing Q2 online, I used to play a variety of single player campaigns and mods, but was unable to find a PC remake of the N64 SP levels.

I was lucky to find a 1v1 video on YouTube on Captivity for reference, and along with using a Doom version for reference, I was able to remake it. The video of the 1v1 match was only divided into two screens so there wasn`t much of a problem there.

link? im curious to see it

Interestingly enough, I recently discovered that the Q2 mod for Doom uses a modified engine which allows for drawing sectors over one another. Perhaps I should just use the Doom ports for reference then?

if you legally own the game but cant find it, and legally own a ps1 even if it doesnt work and/or cant find it... get a playstation emulator up and running and download the quake2 playstation iso :) technically legal, and youll get perfect reference... the thing with the doom port is its still doom :/ so things might be a tad odd in some respects... like i noticed it kinda has a jump pad? but you just float there? how does it ACTUALLY behave in the psx version.... and what items is it really? i guarantee its not a green armor there like the doom version :) i just saw the doom version on youtube, ill check out the psx one later

Well I found my Q2PSX again. I still can't make sense out of the .dat files for the maps, but its not worth the effort trying to reverse engineer that since now that I look back at it, the maps are so painfully basic and would therefore be seriously easy to recreate.

In any case, after like 5 mins in Radiant, I've almost finished recreating Cold Storage. I'll probably do both a 'pure' version and an altered version that doesn't play so much like shit on PC. The item layouts in these maps are hilarious when you think about it. Especially in Coliseum - a small, almost symmetrical map with 3 mega's in one half and 2 in the other, and 4 facking railguns.

As for legalities, Hammerhead, ltd. (which developed the port and all the exclusive maps) went under in 2000, so ownership is somewhere between id Software and Activision. We all know id wouldn't care about remakes that don't directly use the original geometry/assets of the game. I doubt Activision (now Activision Blizzard) would care about an old PSX game that hardly sold any copies, and in the end you probably can't buy the game or console brand new anymore so nobody is losing out, including Sony.

Well it didn't take much to recreate that, but cheers!

Just saw your Captivity remake. Pretty good. Just gotta lose those spawn pads and its better than the original  :rocketright:

Now its time for q2psx2 - Warehouse. Another small, basic map.
