Quake Tournament
« on: May 20, 2005, 06:08:35 PM »
OK, as per M^tster's suggestion, here's the quake tournament thread.

I'm definitely open to suggestions on this whole thing, and if people are actually interested in this thing, just post on this thread to let me know what you think. Maybe we can even start getting some people signed up.

Anyways, who's up for it?

They can be logistical nightmares.  If this is your first time setting one up, locate a knowledgeble gx player for tips on structure and rules.

i am not one, but here are my suggestions in hope that you have a fun, smooth tournament:
1. Use a ladder system to arrange matches, building up to a semi-final and final.
2. Require matches to be completed in one weeks time.  A large ladder with any more alotted time will require months to complete.
3. Detailed rules about picking maps, what to do for noshows, people dropping out mid-tourney, thier replacements in the ladder, how to do determine winner of round(two out of three maps..), who may admin or referee matches...
4. Use some mandatory, single form of communication between the admins and players like an irc channel, aim, or icq.

Hope these ideas help in some way and good luck!  Have fun!

Oh!

Im so into this.

Id love to see a 1v1 on Costum maps. Maps being pre-defined so as to allow some practice, or to simply avoid any unfair surprise. Using GX sounds alright. Perhaps a Swiss Tournament would give some 'try again' aspect that you wouldn't have in a Direct Elimination Tournament.

And a winning prize of 1000$ sounds alright too.  ;D

Anyway - Great Idea. Do your thing.

Yeah, I'm definitely not too knowledgeable about this, and I can use all the help I can get (hint hint). Eyestrain had a great idea, which was to set up a specific tournament server (maybe convert the Bang server, since no one uses it) with a fairly small map rotation, which could perhaps be chosen by those to take part in the tournament. Maybe each person could chose one map, or everyone in the tournament could vote on it.

Oh, and one other thing, if we wanna get this thing off the ground I'm gonna need some help managing this. If someone has some experience at this sort of thing could they let me know?

I think we can squeeze another server onto the CPU... :)  Probably don't need to take down Bang, since if no one's using it, it just takes some memory but very little CPU.

... I just tried to find a gxmod server download for linux on Google.. no luck yet.. I did come across a forum post saying, "OSP is in perfect working order; it has been for years. Most pub pickup servers run GXMod, but GX is horribly buggy. I definitely recommend OSP; it's by far the most stable and versatile for Q2."  (from http://www.quakecon.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-2945.html )

If that's true, maybe we should look into OSP ???

Anyway, if anyone has any links to source or linux binaries for GX or OSP please post, thx.

Regards,

I concur with the OSP-based Tournament. It's truly versatile.

You will need to build a .cfg for your dedicated server - all the settings available can be found here: http://www.orangesmoothie.org/tourney/server-settings.txt

There can be Referees (forced to record demos), Voting options, Sudden death overtime, timeouts, etc...
Even for a DeathMatch Server like 'Mutant' it would  be much more convenient (It has a Regular DM Mode).

Hey, can we get handicaps like in golf?  heheh  Seriously, though, it's kind of a forgone conclusion who's going to be at the top of the leader board in many respects, and I ain't talking about me!  If you would kindly give me a 25 frag starting point, Apple, it might be fair.

I have been looking for a different server config from the ones at  Tastyspleen so as not to mimic the different servers they are running sooooo...
I would be glad to offer up q2.lostourminds.net:27930 as a OSP Tourney server (it is running along side Tastyspleen and gets little use, it is setup like
mutant currently). I will  work on setting it up as OSP this weekend if that would be acceptable. I would need a suitable .cfg as I have never setup an OSP server
and am not sure what a "normal" .cfg would need.

Let me know!!

OSP is real simple, and very similar to vanilla dm servers.  Read the readme, it is pretty straight forward.  i use OSP on three of my four servers, it is stable and offers alot of nice options.
